20 My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. 21 Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, 22 for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body. 23 Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. 24 Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech.
As I was recently riding in my car, I heard an advertisement on the radio asking: “are you at risk of…”? Hearing this reminded me of the constant pitches of fear-based information we receive on a daily basis. “Are you at risk of”…you can fill in the blanks.
The world we live in has always been riddled with fear but it is becoming increasingly so. It is totally up to us whether we will allow our minds to be filled with the poison that’s being sold. Yes, I said sold. Because nearly every time that question is asked, the sponsor has some great miracle medicine or service to sell us, and the only way to truly get our attention is to sell us fear first.
We live in a fear-based world that is designed to keep our eyes, ears, and our minds, fixed on problems and not on our God-given victory. In other words; society, as we know it, is not built on the spiritual principles found in the Bible. But our very lives depend upon said principles. We have the choice of following them or not…it is our choice alone.
Understanding this fact, we must learn to guard our hearts from this onslaught because what we take in will ultimately determine the course of our lives…junk in, junk out. No, this is not to alarm anyone to the point of fear—quite the opposite. It is, however, to put you on guard to watch what is trying to take you away from the Word of God and place you and I on a road of fear.
So, what do we do? We make the decision to follow God’s Word and receive the powerful victory given to us by God through Christ. Decide to resist the bombardment of fear and worry-based information coming to us constantly and look to the Word of God for every answer we need. Jesus told us: ‘Man is not to live on bread only. Man is to live by every word that God speaks.’—Matthew 4:4 (NLV).
Our answer to life’s problems and concerns can be taken from the Word and placed within the confine of our heart and mind through meditating on the Word. Doing this will put us in the position to resist any “risk”.
