20 My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. 21 Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, 22 for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body.—Proverbs 4:20-22 (NLT)
This is the first installment relating to using the Word of God as medicine for the areas in our lives which need healing: bodies, emotions, marriages, families, finances and relationships.
So, let’s learn to take our medicine…
Medical issues are all around us. Also, medicines and treatments for them abound. However, there is one medicine which has no side-effects and from which you cannot overdose. That medicine is the all-powerful Word of God!
The Bible is full of Truths spoken by God, the Lord Jesus or inspired by the Holy Spirit. It is these truths which we must take to heart and allow them to penetrate deeply in order to experience the power of God in every area of our lives.
Surely, we use medication to treat the things which affect us in our physical bodies. But anything used to aid, treat or cure any other problem in our lives can be a type of medicine. For instance, food for a hungry person can be a type of medicine. A job or source of income for someone unemployed can be a type of medicine. Peace in a house full of turmoil can be a type of medicine for that situation as well. I guess you can see where I’m going.
Just as those things mentioned can be a type of medicine, so can the Word of God be the same for us. What is different here is, the Bible contains all the different medicines we need for life. Physically, emotionally, financially, marriage and family—all can be treated by the TRUTH found in the Bible and we need all of it.
However, just as the instructions tells us to take as prescribed. So we should take the medicine of the scriptures as prescribed. When we apply the Word to our lives, we give it opportunity to work in our lives. Just as medication still in the bottle cannot do us any good, neither can the Truth left in the Bible.
So, it is our responsibility to take the medicine of God’s Word daily—or several times a day. You cannot overdose and it has no negative side-effects. But don’t forget to use it according to the directions:
…Listen carefully to my words. 21 Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, 22 for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body.
