Using the Word to Change Your Life

Words Have Power to Change Your Life

20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.Proverbs 4:20-23

It is imperative to understand that God’s Word is the breath we breathe; and it will absolutely change everything we desire or need to be changed in our lives. There are some practical steps that will help you grasp this and put it to use. I will try to keep it simple.

Here goes:

1. Find out what God’s Word has to say about your situation;

                My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. (vs.20)

In everything we do and face we must address it with the Word of God. I know this may seem extreme but the life of the Believer has to be based upon the Word. Without it, our faith is groundless. We cannot afford to live by differing sets of rules; our lives have to be governed by The Book. Therefore, whenever we are faced with situations and circumstances that seems beyond our control, we have to go to the Word of God and search for the verses that relate to that particular issue.

Once you have found the verses, prayerfully read them to see which ones ‘speak’ to your spirit. The reason I used the term speak is because what you have found may be appropriate but it is not the word you may need right now. Please understand that the Bible is a spiritual book and must be read prayerfully with an open heart that is ready to receive.

2. Believe that Word as absolute Truth;

              Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. (vs.21)

The key to realizing the power of God through His Word is to stay in His Word and to keep it in your heart. David said: Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” (Psalm 119:11). To be effective, we cannot afford a little bit here and there. We have to be consistent in our study of the Word.

We have to understand and believe that this is God Himself speaking to us through the instructive and prophetic words in the Bible, and through the lives and experiences of others in it as well. It absolutely cannot be just another story to us…it has to be as important as the food we eat, the water we drink, or the breath we breathe!

Believe the Word with everything in you and be determined that when opposition come…believe me, it will…remember, the Word is always right! Opposition is the enemy trying to get you to fall short of God’s best for you by believing something other than what He has promised. Remember the storm that rose up when Peter was walking on the water?

The scriptures teach the importance of the Word by describing it as a seed that is planted in the soil of a person’s heart and the fruitfulness of that seed will be determined by the condition of the heart (Luke 8:11-15). We have to use the Word as a seed and plant, water, nurture, and harvest it. Just as we would not place seed on the table and expect it to grow; or plant it in the morning and dig it up in the evening, expecting it to grow; so, we must place the seed of the Word of God deep within our hearts and do everything within us to protect it and nurture it for growth.

In other words, spend time in God’s Word. Reflect upon it in such a way that our heart will begin to trust it as truth. Jesus came as more than just a sacrificial lamb. He came as the embodiment of God’s Grace and Power in a man…showing that with God, there are no impossibilities. But it is imperative that we believe and hold to the Truth of God’s Word above all else and act on what we believe.

3. Apply that Word to that situation through meditating and confessing that or those scriptures daily…as we would prescription medication;

              For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. (vs. 22)

It is amazing how the children of the Living God will accept the Word of another human being over that of the Lord of Glory! I believe we all do it. We trust Doctors, Lawyers, Politicians, Economists, Scientists, and even Weathermen; but we have trouble trusting the Word of God. It is that Word that is at the core of everything we see in this natural world.

We live in a physical world that was created as God spoke. Our bodies are based upon the model that God created. Our real selves, our spirit, are made in the image of God. Therefore, it is imperative that we take and hold onto the Word as we would the prescription that the doctor would write. The medicine may help but it cannot heal. Only God can heal; only He can put a marriage back together.

When we find what God has to say about our situation, it is then we receive that word as truth and then apply that word to our lives through meditating or contemplating on it and confessing it out of mouths. God spoke words in creation and gave us the same ability to use our words that are spoken in line with His word to create in our lives.

This is not a one-time thing; we must discipline ourselves to take the remedy of the Word to cure every disorder in our lives; whether it be our bodies, finances, or families…you name it…there is Word for it.

    We share the same radical notion of God first – Word foundation – live faith. This article on reading the Bible with all our soul is more than vital – as you write. Human rules get human results. God`s words get God`s results. Shalom and peace.

  3. Such a touching and powerful message! My husband and I felt like it really triggered us, as I’m sure it did many, we are currently out of work and are trying desperately to find a job somewhere, anywhere at this point. We are reading the Bible every morning, but this has helped us realize that we need to find verses and study more on “patience”, and “God’s will” and “no worries” perhaps? When it comes to what we are struggling with, what topic verses to you recommend?

  4. Good morning Sebastian and thank you for your insight which never fails to lift me up!

    Yes, isn’t it amazing how some will trust others but fail to trust the Word of God? Perhaps they have seen how others in life continually fail them, so fail to recognize that God is Lord of all and give God the attributes of humanity. By not comprehending the enormity of God, their faith fails every time. How grateful I am that I cannot understand all God’s ways, but will look forward to understanding all in heaven! God bless.

    Thank you Sebastian for your wise words in reference to God’s written word, we do indeed need to seek to obey His guidelines in them but first as you shared also, we need to know The Living Word Jesus Christ, without Him we will never understand God’s inspired written word as shown in 1Corinthians2:9-16 Jesus said to the ParaPharisees that although they studied the word they did not seek Him. I believe and have experienced that God can use Scripture to touch our hearts when we are seeking Him even when we are in darkness but the True light comes when we are Born again of The Holy Spirit and Jesus rises in our heart.

      Hello Ron and Anne, good to hear from you!

      Yes, you are right, we must seek to know Christ in our daily lives to really know and understand the Truth of the Word. Far too many have sought to know the Bible without getting to know Him of Whom it is written!

      The passage you referenced in 1 Corinthians 2:9-16 tells us that it is His will for us to know Him in light of the scriptures. He is not holding anything from us but by His Spirit, He reveals Himself to all that are willing to receive.

      Thank you for your insight and input to this post. Blessings to you both!

  7. Yes! I have been asking my small group for prayer for self-discipline to go to the Word everyday. How are we to live this life without knowing the Truth behind it? And God is faithful even in our unfaithfulness (2 Tim 2:13), so Lord cultivate in us all a desire to drown in Your Word and be swept away by Your Truth!
    Thank you for the simple, yet deep and powerful truths that you have challenged us with.
    “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Tim 3:16-17

      You’re welcome! Thank you for you kindness!

      It is important to realize the importance study of the Word play in our ability to gain revelation. Without insight into what God is saying to us, all we will have is religion.

      Thank you for allowing the Lord to guide you as you guide others towards the revealing Truth of God’s Word! Blessings to you and yours!
